How is litres per engine hour calculated?
Litres per engine hour is litres issued divided by engine hours worked. The variance is the litres issued minus the expected rate times the engine hours.
Where does the expected rate come from?
From the equipment manufacturer's figures or, better, the machine's own history on similar work. Burn changes with load, haul road and idling, so compare like with like.
What does a large variance mean?
More litres than the hours explain. It can be a wrong meter reading, heavy idling, diesel booked to the wrong machine or diesel going missing, so check the records first.
